Life Drawing in Animation

After being given the Form, Flow, Force brief, I decided to do some research into why life drawing is so important for animation. In many of the classic Disney animation such as Sleeping Beauty, Cinderella and One Hundred and One Dalmatians, live models were used to draw from in real time, so the animators could get a feel for realistic movement and that of how clothing would move as well as body parts.

Disney still offer free life drawing classes for the artists within their studios to help animators better understand the fundamentals of the human form, how clothing and gesture inform character and intent, and how to infuse spirit into their figures.
